Antidepressant drugs, already known to cause sexual side effects, may also suppress the basic human emotions of love and romance. That SSRIs, or selective serotonin reuptake inhibitors — the most common type of antidepressant — cause sexual dysfunction is common knowledge. Of the 31 million adults in the United States who take the SSRIs, about 30 percent are believed to experience sexual dysfunction.
But a new theory suggests that SSRI antidepressants may also subtly alter the fundamental chemistry of love and romance, snuffing the first sparks between two people otherwise destined to become lovers, and preventing couples from bonding. For some people, of course, sexual side effects are an acceptable price to pay for curing debilitating depression. But as antidepressant use becomes more common, extending beyond full-blown clinical depression to disorders like anxiety and, in some cases, insomnia, the possibility of love-stunting is troubling.

Ann Intern Med ; The investigators studied whether continuing bupropion treatment after initial success would decrease the relapse rate. Participants were motivated to stop smoking and were generally in good health. The investigators excluded persons dependent on alcohol or other non-nicotine substances in the previous year, those using psychotropic medications or with a history of bupropion use, those currently using tobacco products other than cigarettes, and those currently using another therapy for smoking cessation.
All participants were given self-help material and took mg bupropion sustained-release daily for 7 weeks. The subjects were instructed to set a target quit date 1 week after initiating treatment. Participants who had abstained from smoking cigarettes at week 7 were randomized to receive either bupropion or placebo for a total of 1 year. Allocation to treatment group was concealed and intention-to-treat analyses were performed.
Participants returned for 14 visits during the first year the medication phase and for 5 visits during the follow-up year. All participants received the same educational material and counseling at each visit throughout the study. Participants who were abstinent at every visit were classified as continuously abstinent.

Bupropion is widely used for treating bipolar disorder BD , and especially those with depressive mood, based on its good treatment effect, safety profile, and lower risk of phase shifting. However, increasing evidence indicates that the safety of bupropion in BD patients may not be as good as previously thought. The aim of this study was to summarize data on the treatment effect and safety profile of bupropion in the treatment of BD via a meta-analysis.
The inclusion criteria were: i studies comparing changes in disease severity before and after bupropion treatment or articles comparing the treatment effect of bupropion in BD patients with those receiving other standard treatments; ii articles on clinical trials in humans. All effect sizes from 10 clinical trials were pooled using a random effects model. We examined the possible confounding variables using meta-regression and subgroup analysis.
We could not perform a detailed meta-analysis of every category of antidepressant, nor could we rule out the possible confounding effect of concurrent psychotropics or include all drug side effects.

As a psychopharmacologist, I know that every patient responds slightly differently to medication. But it wasn’t until I met Susan that I understood just how differently. But as often happens, Susan’s desire for sex had vanished along with her depressed mood.
